Seeing Double: Adult Strabismus

seeing-double-adult-strabismus

Adult strabismus (crossed eyes) is when your eyes are not lined up properly or when they point in different directions. One eye may look ahead while the other eye turns up, down, in, or out. This misalignment can shift from one eye to the other.

Some of the causes of strabismus that Visual Ophthalmology Services, P.C. notices among our clients are:

  • Health problems like diabetes, thyroid disease, myasthenia gravis, or stroke
  • Head injury
  • Damage to the eye muscles due to eye surgery

Clients in our ophthalmology clinic in Elmhurst, New York who have strabismus experience double vision. This is because adult brains have already learned to receive images from both eyes, that their brains can no longer ignore the images from the turned eye. This results in seeing 2 images.

Some common symptoms are weakness in or around the eye, vision changes such as blurry vision and double vision, and constantly having to tilt or turn your head to see an image clearly. If you are worried, make sure to meet a certified ophthalmologist in Ridgewood, New York.
